For this project I really wanted to make a shoulder mounted launcher of somekind. I knew I wanted it to be a sci-fi piece as well. Here are a few of the designs I came up with.
I chose one that I liked and did some refinements and made many different variations.

I started modeling one of the designs I liked but I wasn't a fan with how it was feeling so I ended up starting over with a different design.
This was the original design
I started blocking my new idea. My though process behind this, I thought it would be awesome to have a jet turbine sitting on your shoulder that shot solid ion beams, capable of breaking through the shields of enemy ships, and all from the comfort of your shoulder.

I started detailing the business end of the cannon and also adding details to the ammo cylinders

While working on the grips I took a lot of inspiration from flight sticks.
Blocking
Here I added some new features, since this is a big gun it needed a few safety features, because no one like accidental discharges. I added a trigger saftey and a grip safety. I also added an Omega switch and directional thumbsticks. This is a big gun and aiming at a moving ship can be hard. A feature I want to add on the gun will be an auto aim assist. A beam of energy only goes straight so the cannon will have an RCS system or a reaction control system. There will be tiny thrusters on the end of the cannon to orient and track the ship while firing. The thumbsticks would be there for a manual adjustments.

I continued detailing and also started on the optics.
I am having a lot of fun creating this piece and I figure I will put this in the unreal engine later on. So I decided to add some exaust vents that would pop up when firing. After the contest I will animate it and effects for firing .

Here is what the finished optics looks like. I spend some time looking at optics on different military weapons like the TOW missiles and Javelin missiles. There is no lens on this because It interfaces with the weapon and uses the lenses on the front of the cannon. I added more details the the turbine body. I took much inspiration from military jet and commercial aircraft turbines.

UVs are done, I split the Gun into 8 parts. The upper gun, the business end, cannon body, lower gun, grips, optics, Ammo Pods, and the ammo receiver

I did some layout designs to come up with a story for this weapon:
- My first idea was for the gun to be hanging on the wall of a pawn shop almost forgotten. This is post war and the gun that was used to win it now sits as a forgotten giant among other items like a diamond in the rough.
- My second idea was a garage workshop where the weapon seems like advance technology sitting among basic items.
I decided on a workshop environment as I thought it would fit the backstory of my gun better
