Hi guys!
This is my first time participating in the car challenge, very excited!
I just finished this as one of my graduation demo reel for GNOMON School of Visual Effect and came across this competition!
Cars has always been my biggest interest since I was little, thus the only thing I'm certain about while creating my demo reel is to make a scene with a car in it!
And now I finally have the chance and the skill to really make it happen.
I'd like to share with you guys my steps for creating this piece.
I'll try to sort out the progress screenshot I saved through out making the project and update here each day.
Alright! Enough talking. Let me start from some of the test renders I did while modeling the exterior!

Exterior
Here are some of the test render shots I did just to check my surface smoothness
something I insisted and challenged myself is to model out the "Skyline" characters on the rear bumper as well as bumps on tail light cover ( I'll be doing the same to the front light as well later on! )
At this stage I haven't add in thickness to all the body panels as you see in the image above.
I've modeled out the factory body then modeled the body kit to assemble them on.
Took me a while to research exactly how far the wide body goes out.
And for this project I gathered as much reference as I can as usual since they are very important for getting a model to look right and to help me understand more about the car I'm modeling. Know your enemies! :))
I should've kept my reference sheet way more organized as you can see down bellow....
But just a quick screen shot of all the reference I gathered into pure ref in order to help me model.
Sometimes your learn something you didn't even know or payed attention to of the car!

Continuing my progress yesterday.
After getting the big exterior parts down, I started to model the secondary parts ( exposed elements )
Modeled the intercooler
Head lights
exhaust
Adding in a series of little flat area for attaching body kit to factory body
Wipper added
refined the surface pf the rear quarter window since I discovered there's actually a slight bend towards the edge where it meets the door window ( you can see from the reflection/ refraction )
Modeled the pattern for the rear directional lights
Adjusting the thickness of the wheel, making sure it's more accurate and added in breaking set
Set up some quick studio lightings with background just to have a better idea of how the surface and the overall car looks.
At this point I'm basically done with the exterior part!
Going to move on to interior modeling.

Sharing the fun part today
Interior!
So much pain yet so much fun!
I started the interior from the center console
and worked my way to steering wheel and adding in seats ( BRIDE )
Working on floor panel
Seats added
door panel added as well
which is the the part that gave me a lot headache
since there's so many panels sandwiching together here, areas being covered by other parts, I had to look for reference for some weird angles to figure out what's going on. Looked through a bunch of photos and videos as well just to get the right angle I need to have a peek into those areas. Such as the front door hinge area. And other weird angles to help me figure out how the door panels curve and the correct relative thickness of each panels.
This is the part that took me the longest! Since correcting one panel mean you gotta change the rest as well. This stage for me was half of the time modeling and the other half just searching for the right reference like a mad man, which exploded my reference sheet like I showed in the first post.
at this point the thickness side of the door is still incorrect, thickness and the curve of the inner panel and the door metal part is off ( too thick )
moved on to block out the tank, will circle back to the door again later on.
thinned down the door and applied slight curvature on the Y direction, also sealed the holes on both sides of the center console where it meets the door. Added the rubber parts that goes around the frame.
Added more detail to the center console and handbreak, shifter, seatbelts( referencing to TAKATA 4 point harness ), half role cage, peddles, dash ,and more details behind the steering wheels ( A/C vents, keyhole .etc )
Modeled the roof trim, lights and other parts as well
Trying to keep the looong progress somehow short to be not too overwhelming, so didn't go too detail of all the pits and pieces
but there it is! the interior is almost done! just need a few tweaking here and there.
Also doing the floor mat with V-ray fur.
And that wraps up the interior part!.
I'll follow up with me lookdeving the body paint color tomorrow and modeling out the scene.

Been busy for the past few days, but finally found some time today to do some update of lookdeving the car.
Initially went with the classic blue but thought to make it more special, so I decided to change it to the very special paint for GTR, the midnight purple!
Creating the paint just from the reference I gathered online, I thought I managed to come up with a somehow close enough midnight purple until I saw the paint in person in a car meet. Then I realized I was missing an entire half spectrum of the paint( missing the green section ).
I did a few progress shots before correcting the paint
so as you can see all renders down bellow are missing the green spectrum
but still thought to show them first. ( ignore the foggy tail light, haven't fix them yet back at this point )

Now for the corrected midnight purple studio shot
After this I just did a few tweaking on the textures here and there.
And for the entire car, that's about it!
I'll try find sometime to show some progress of environment.

Creating the textures for my environment ( based on Tokyo Shin shinjuku )
and figuring out the lightings for the scene ( did this while I was still in the middle of texturing the car )
also added in some small Godzila Easter eggs to the scene since R32 has been nicknamed Godzila. Thought would be fun to add them in.
Tried out different environments later on as well. Some of the quick test renders I did back then just to see the lightings and playing around with camera.
